Art Church is the first expression of what we hope will grow into a retreat center, The Lodge@Stony Hill. The grounds, space, and community invite contemplation, meditation, and a sense of creative energy. The people of Stony Hill United Methodist wish to share this space with others. Twice a month, we sit with scripture, listen to what it evokes, and respond by making something with our hands. This is definitely not your grandmother’s Sunday school (no offense to any grandmothers!).

Why Art?

In the beginning, God created. If we’re created in God’s image, then creating is part of what it means to be human. When we create, we encounter a little of the Divine. That means all of us were made to be artists even if we would never think of ourselves in that way.

Who is this for?

This is an open and inclusive space and a safe place for anyone who has been hurt by the church or felt like an outsider. It’s for people who learn by doing something with their hands, who aren’t into traditional worship, and who are curious about Jesus but not so sure about church.

If you’ve ever felt like too much or not enough—the misfits, creatives, crafters, wanna-be artists, the less-than-churchy—this is for you.

A note from Pastor Angela

I’m a United Methodist pastor who happens to be creative (so everyone tells me). Something happens when I create—I lose track of time, my stress eases, my mind quiets and focuses. That space gives me room to think, to pray, to dream, to imagine, to listen. That kind of space does not come easily in this electronic world. My desire is to create the kind of community and space where other people can experience that too.
